Winter at Winteringham Fields

December 1, 2017

Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand and for a talk beside the fire: it is the time for home.
— EDITH SITWELL

Although the weather is turning cold and crisp and the is village is dusted with a layer of frost, our restaurant is warm, cosy and filled with laughter. The festive season is busier than ever, with great food, a lively atmosphere and guests enjoying a home away from home.

It is only after the Christmas period that the season relaxes, becoming the perfect time for a short break to reflect back upon the year.

We never rest on our laurels for long though, and we grab the chance to do a spot of maintenance at this point in the year. Thorough cleaning of the restaurant and guestrooms ensues, with a lick of paint here and there to keep things looking spick and span.

Sussex House down the road also needs its fair share of TLC, so stables are repaired and any extra fencing is added to keep the animals safe and sound. It’s typical Winteringham fields team work - with the boys, Bex and even our daughters mucking in where possible, making it feel a whole lot less like work and more like quality time together.

In the garden, trees are trimmed and the seating areas prepared for sunnier times to come.

Forward thinking is key during the winter and I start planning the planting scheme for the year. Preparing for a new season with the finest and freshest produce, I’m inspired with new creations to make use of our seasonal best.

Towards the end of the winter season, life kicks into gear for Valentine’s day at the the restaurant (which is always bedlam!) giving us a taste of things to come over the months ahead.
